Well, hello there
Just kickin' the tires here
A long time ago I used to blog regularly. Not every day, and it was usually just nonsense, but regularly enough that it was a thing I thought about and worked on more or less daily.
And then social media happened, and that drive to put something out into the world was sated instantly and in vapid little ephemeral snippets that have since vanished like so much smoke.
But I’ve largely stopped using social media. Elon’s wilful and malicious destruction of Twitter is the core of it. I loved Twitter. It was imperfect and often terrible in a variety of ways, but I loved it. But Elon murdered it, and fuck that guy in particular.
I’m on Facebook and Instagram still, but I don’t really post on them. The deeper we get into everything’s trying to be TikTok phase of things, the less interested I am in participating. I have seen so many otherwise talented and reasonable people post such deeply cringeworthy videos in a desperate attempt to work the algorithm that I just…can’t. I am a lifelong and devout introvert. I am incapable of being photographed well. I hate the sound of my own voice. For me, making and posting videos ranks as a higher digit circle of hell.
I’ll probably write more about this at some point, but social media is trash and I’m pretty much done with it.
So, now having solidly buried the lede, I’m thinking about starting to blog again. That drive to share random crap still exists. I also like writing, and I’ve recently been doing some things (spoiler alert: it’s mostly pottery) that people might find interesting. And there’s all the other nonsense that goes on in my brain.
Anyhow, I figure that since I like Substack as a reader (I follow a number of writers here, including a handful of paid subscriptions), maybe I’ll also like it as a writer. Let’s see how this goes.
